There are some kids who love nothing better than to read and you can’t get their noses out of the books. And there are others who hate it with equal passion. The book lovers have the advantage because reading is such a helpful activity for building general intellect, vocabulary, imagination, creativity, and a lot of other things. So, what do you do about the book haters?
Well, for starters, don’t require large amounts of reading, but do require some. They should be expected to read a small amount everyday. Try to find the latest children’s books that will contain subject matters they enjoy. Offer small incentives for improvements in their reading. Listen to them read. Make it fun. Encourage them to read and, if necessary, require them to read. Reading is the foundation of all the rest of their education, so you can’t afford to be slack in it. Someday they will be glad you pushed them through it.
